Tent Design

There are several common styles of backpacking tent available.

Tunnel Tent

The tunnel tent is functional, simple, has a great volume and is often lightweight for its size. It mostly comprises of 2 or 3 flexible poles that form a tunnel shape and this simple design offers great weight to volume ratios.

Dome Tent

Dome tents have a more robust design with flexible poles that cross over each other to make a more stable shape. These are most commonly constructed with 3 or 4 poles which provide a number of crossing points and a stronger geodesic design. This design also offers a free standing tent that only needs to be pegged to stop it from blowing away.
